Niche has just released its 2018 list of best Schools in America, and has ranked the Francis Howell School District No. 16 in Missouri. New Activity Fees and Changes to High School Activity Transportation

The FHSD Board of Education has approved the recommendation of the Extracurricular Task Force to establish an activity fee structure for the 2017-18 school year. Students participating in a sport, activity, or club - in which a sponsor or coach is paid a stipend - will be required to pay a yearly activity fee. Students will be assessed one fee regardless of how many sports/activities/clubs they participate in during the school year. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is a busy place year-round, and not just during the school year. There are more than 2,000 employees in the District, and almost 20 percent of them work a 12-month schedule. “The District does not shut down over the summer,” said FHSD Superintendent Dr. Mary Hendricks-Harris, “quite the contrary. Educating 18,000 students is a year-round, full-time job. In addition to preparing the high quality education our students deserve for 2017-18, we have also started working on our next five-year strategic plan, and our community will have the opportunity to be part of that process this fall.”   Read more about What Happens in FHSD Over the Summer?

On May 11, 2016, a severe thunderstorm with large hail caused significant damage throughout the Francis Howell School District. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is committed to providing engaging and enriching camp opportunities to students over the summer months. Two of the most popular are the elementary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) and middle school STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Math) camps. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) believes that every child deserves the opportunity to learn and play in a safe environment, including those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Some students were born without the gift of hearing, and some have lost it over time. But all of these students get to live and learn like every other kid, thanks to the support of many great special educators in FHSD. "Girls on the Run" at FHSD

Girls on the Run has empowered strong, motivated, and healthy girls across the country and in the Francis Howell School District (FHSD). Girls on the Run is a 10-week program recognized by the National AfterSchool Association (NAA) as one of the nation’s “Most Influential in Health and Wellness” programs available to young girls in third through eighth grade. Girls on the Run is the only program in St. Louis with this recognition. Not only does it focus on training for a 5K run at the end of the program, it also helps girls develop their strength of character, confidence, compassion toward others, encourages creating positive connections with peers, and many other life skills necessary for growth and maturity. This year, six FHSD schools participated in the 10-week program, and will participate in the 5K run in downtown St. Louis, on Saturday, May 13. The Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) testing for students in the Francis Howell School District will take place during the month of April. MAP tests are mandated by the state, and are intended to help determine what a child knows and is able to do according to the expectations for his or her grade level. Scores on the MAP tests are also used to determine how schools are performing according to state and federal guidelines.  Read more about MAP Testing Begins

Every year, the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) celebrates the National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America Week, in honor of Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel’s birthday on March 2. Every day during the week, students had a chance to celebrate in a different and creative way! One of the student favorites during the week was “Hats Off to Reading Day,” when students and staff wore their goofiest hats. From bedazzled, bright baseball caps to vibrant, animal-shaped hats, students and staff had a great time showing off their goofiest headwear, in honor of Dr. Seuss!  Read more about Hats Off to Dr. Seuss!

The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) will be dipped in red the week of Oct. 24-28, as schools across the District and the nation celebrate Red Ribbon Week, an event dedicated to raising awareness for alcohol, tobacco, drugs and violence prevention. For a decade, Becky-David Elementary has been participating in and celebrating the “rainbow of abilities” present within its school community, as well as the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) Community, during their Abilities Awareness Week. Staff and students put on several events and celebrations, and invited guests to speak about the abilities they had to overcome. It’s a celebration of life as most of us don’t know it. Student safety is always a top priority of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD). The District annually conducts a variety of safety drills including fire, tornado, earthquake and intruder drills. Participation in these safety drills is where most students get directly involved in their own safety. FHSD Recognized for Bus Safety

The buses that safely transport students of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) every day will display a special new sticker starting in August, after earning the “Total Fleet Excellence” distinction for 2016. The stickers indicate excellence in the overall maintenance and reliability of the District’s bus fleet. The distinction is determined by the Missouri State Highway Patrol based on the results of the annual school bus inspection, a program conducted by the Patrol’s Motor Vehicle Inspection Division.   Read more about FHSD Recognized for Bus Safety

Every November, students in the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) seek to honor those who sacrifice so much in serving in our country’s military. Whether it be a Veterans Day celebration, or a fundraiser to benefit veterans, FHSD students strive to make sure veterans know just how appreciated they are. Throughout the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) during the month of October, schools take part in Abilities Awareness Week (AAW) by hosting assemblies and special activities. They bring in guest speakers who generously give up their time to help others understand and learn more about the abilities of people with disabilities. One FHSD school, Becky-David Elementary, decided to give something back to one of the presenters on Jan. 22. Madelyn Hubbs spoke at their school last October, and her message was so powerful that the students at Becky-David decided to donate nearly an hundred stuffed animals to give to kids at the children’s hospital Madelyn represents.  Read more about Give, and You’ll Receive – Becky-David students give back to AAW presenter
